A garden that waits for you: plants for your holiday home

If you only come at weekends or in summer, choose plants that look after themselves. These are the ones that do best around Begur and Palafrugell.

A second home on the Costa Brava comes with a challenge: the garden has to cope for weeks with nobody there. The key is to choose plants adapted to the Mediterranean climate, which thrive on little water and don't need daily attention.

Shrubs that won't let you down - Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus): native, evergreen and very drought-tolerant. - Myrtle (Myrtus communis): aromatic, flowers in summer and easy to keep. - Italian buckthorn (Rhamnus alaternus): makes a good natural hedge and stands up to wind. - Shrubby germander (Teucrium fruticans): silver foliage and blue flowers almost all year.

Herbs and flowers - Rosemary, lavender and santolina: they want sun and very little water. - Gaura and Phlomis: long flowering with little watering.

Three habits that make all the difference - Install drip irrigation with a timer: water exactly where it's needed, even when you're away. - Mulch the soil with bark or gravel: it holds moisture and keeps weeds down. - Plant in autumn: roots grow with the rain and the plant is established by summer.

Avoid ice plant (Carpobrotus): it is invasive on the Catalan coast and crowds out native vegetation.
