Climbers for sunny walls
Bougainvillea, star jasmine or plumbago: colour and shade for walls and pergolas, and what to watch out for in winter.
Published on August 25, 2026

A white wall covered in a flowering climber is a classic Costa Brava sight. These are the ones that do best.
The most rewarding - Bougainvillea: spectacular flowers from spring to autumn. It dislikes cold, so plant it against a south-facing wall sheltered from the tramontane. - Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides): strong summer scent, evergreen and very tough. - Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata): sky-blue flowers for months; copes well with heat. - Wisteria: a stunning spring display for large pergolas; it needs a solid structure.
Tips - Put up trellis or wires before planting so the plant can climb from the start. - Prune bougainvillea at the end of winter, once there is no more risk of frost. - In a cold winter, protect young plants with horticultural fleece on frosty nights.
